UNICEF and EU Modernise Quranic Schools in Kano with Learning Kits and Skills Training
The United Nations Children’s Fund and the European Union have teamed up to modernise Quranic centres across Kano and northern Nigeria. They donated new learning materials, uniforms and funded tutorials to bring these schools in line with mainstream education. At Maahad Gwari Dan Birni Tsangaya Qu’ranic Centre, student numbers have leapt from 47 in 2018 to 351 today. Both girls and boys now study Quran alongside mathematics, English and vocational skills like tailoring and knitting. A high-level EU delegation, led by Ambassador Gautier Mignot, visited the centre and met Kano’s Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo. They discussed urban development, youth opportunities and social inclusion. The group also toured UN-supported programmes at Bayero University Kano, a therapeutic food production facility and high-level policy dialogues on reducing poverty in the North-West. Participants pledged clear, time-bound actions to improve education, health and social protection for vulnerable children and women.
