Cholera Outbreak Kills 13 in Borno’s Biu LGA as Cases Begin to Slow

Thirteen people have died in a cholera outbreak that affected 621 patients in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State between May and July 21. The Director of Primary Health Care in the council said 373 patients were admitted at General Hospital, Biu, where six died, while 248 were treated at 16 primary health centres, with seven deaths recorded. He said 74 people were still on admission, while the rest had been treated and discharged. He added that the outbreak was no longer escalating because of measures taken by the Borno State Ministry of Health and support from the local government chairman. Relief items such as chlorine, oral rehydration solution, knapsack sprayers, doxycycline, soap and hand sanitizers were donated. Residents were also urged to report symptoms early, as treatment is free.
