Police Bust Phone Theft Ring, Arrest Suspect With 36 Stolen Devices in Akwa Ibom
Officers of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have re-arrested Musa Idris with 34 Android smartphones and two feature phones suspected to be stolen from robbery operations across and beyond the state. The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, said Idris was apprehended along the Calabar-Itu Road following credible intelligence. Investigations show he was first arrested in October 2025 for armed robbery and possession of over 200 stolen phones. Idris confessed to being part of a wider syndicate moving and reselling stolen phones across Nigeria and into neighbouring countries. Police say efforts are now focused on arresting other members still at large. The commissioner also highlighted recent efforts to curb false security alerts, enforce vehicle registration rules, and improve officers’ welfare and readiness. One suspect charged for circulating a threatening online message has been remanded, he added.
