Tinubu Inaugurates Panel to Draft National Policing Bill

Tinubu Inaugurates Panel to Draft National Policing Bill

President Bola Tinubu has launched a Presidential Working Group to prepare the legal framework for implementing state police across Nigeria. Inaugurated at the Presidential Villa by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, the committee will draft a technically robust National Policing Bill now that the Constitution Alteration (State Police) Bill has passed the National Assembly. The group, chaired by Gbajabiamila, includes the Attorney-General, NBA president, NGF chairman, NSC, IGP and other key security and legal officials. It will outline standards for policing, federal-state coordination, human rights safeguards and funding conditions. Governors have pledged to fast-track the constitutional amendment in their assemblies to avoid delays. The initiative aims to add roughly 200,000 state police officers to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

What potential challenges do you expect as Tinubu's panel drafts the National Policing Bill for state-level forces?

Haha, absolutely, harmonising state autonomy with a unified policing framework could spark plenty of debates and headaches.

Creating a technically robust framework sounds promising, but federal and state interests often clash over policing powers.

I'm not convinced this committee can move beyond political gridlock without stronger safeguards or clearer timelines in place.

Dem fit pilot state policing in a few regions first, track outcomes closely, then refine the Bill before full national rollout.
