FG Commits $500m Cash to Transform Lagos International Airport

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced that the Federal Government is investing $500 million in cash to modernize Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. Approved by the Federal Executive Council, the comprehensive overhaul will take 22 months and requires no loans. Work is already under way at MMIA, with contractors on site. The upgrade will introduce new terminals, self-check-in facilities and expanded capacity to position Lagos as a leading African aviation hub. A second runway project in Abuja will also resume following presidential approval. The urgent redevelopment follows a fire at MMIA’s old Terminal 1 in February, which damaged communication systems and prompted an early demolition order. Plans are also in progress for a new Lekki International Airport to support growing traffic from the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
