FG to Seek Compensation for Assets Abandoned by Nigerians in South Africa
The federal government says it will pursue South Africa for compensation over businesses, vehicles and properties left behind by Nigerians returning under its voluntary evacuation programme. Acting High Commissioner Alexander Ajayi urged returnees to document shops, cars and other assets accurately. He plans to present these records to South African authorities as part of formal compensation talks. Ajayi also dismissed claims that most Nigerians in South Africa were undocumented. He explained that delays in renewing immigration papers left many legally resident Nigerians with expired documents. Former ambassador Joseph Ayalogu backed calls for diplomatic pressure on Pretoria. He urged the South African government to protect foreign investments and consider compensation for those whose assets were destroyed or seized during xenophobic attacks.
