Retired Brigadier General D.G. James Rejects Allegations of Corruption in Nigerian Army
Retired Brigadier General D.G. James has dismissed recent allegations of systemic corruption in the Nigerian Army as unsubstantiated and misleading. In a statement issued Thursday, he challenged claims—originating from an anonymous report—that “mushroom units” exist, budgets are inflated, and operational resources are diverted. He stressed that serious allegations require verifiable proof and that anonymous sources alone cannot establish fact. James explained that new formations and task forces respond to evolving security threats such as insurgency and banditry. He said personnel changes, casualties, and redeployments can leave some units below full strength without indicating corruption. He also noted that the Army’s centralised, biometric payroll system makes double-counting of personnel implausible. The retired general criticised the use of a fallen officer’s death to support unverified claims and urged a fair, evidence-driven investigation. He reminded Nigerians that defence funding involves multiple stakeholders and called on citizens to demand credible evidence before drawing conclusions about the Armed Forces.
