Presidency Says Nigerians Will Help Shape National Policing Bill
The Presidency says President Bola Tinubu has not dictated the specific contents of the proposed National Policing Bill. Instead, the bill is being developed through consultations with security experts, state governments, the judiciary, academia and members of the public. The legislation is expected to provide operational rules for Nigeria’s proposed dual policing system after the constitutional amendment created a framework for federal and state police. Key issues include funding, recruitment, training, command structure, jurisdiction, certification and coordination between the two services. The Presidential Working Group says the bill must also resolve practical questions, including how police formations should handle suspects who cross state borders. Nigerians have been invited to submit memoranda, while a 26-member advisory committee will review the draft before it is presented to the President.
