Pregnant Woman Delivers Baby on Courtroom Bench During Drug Arraignment

A 33-year-old woman went into labour while waiting to be arraigned on drug charges in a crowded Brooklyn courtroom. She was nine months pregnant when her water broke and she slumped forward on the bench just before midnight. Court officers, prosecutors and defence staff sprang into action and the baby boy was delivered safely on the spot. Authorities say the woman was arrested the night before for alleged possession of a controlled substance and trespassing after police spotted her on a housing complex rooftop. She had not disclosed her pregnancy or asked for medical help when she was taken into custody. The Legal Aid Society and public defender groups issued a joint statement about the unusual birth.
