Oyo Police Deny Officers Shot Polytechnic Ibadan Graduate, Cite 2021 Forensic Findings

The Oyo State Police Command has denied allegations that two officers shot Nurudeen Azeez, a Polytechnic Ibadan graduate, during a 2021 armed robbery response in Ibadan. The case resurfaced after a viral interview in which Azeez said the shooting left him paralysed and appealed for help to walk again. Police said the officers, Inspector Gbenga Ayodele and Sergeant Ayilaran Boluwaji, were on duty in the Ikolaba area on August 16, 2021, when they responded to reports of armed robbers and gunshots. Investigators recovered a locally made pistol at the scene and confirmed that Azeez had sustained gunshot injuries. According to the command, forensic tests found that the officers' AK-47 rifles had not been fired in connection with the incident. It also said pellets removed from Azeez's body did not match AK-47 ammunition, while the recovered pistol showed signs of recent use. Police said the evidence did not identify who shot Azeez or link either officer to the shooting.
