INEC Refutes Claims It Copied Tinubu Aide’s Press Release

The Independent National Electoral Commission has denied copying a recent statement from Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Tinubu on New Media. INEC calls reports of plagiarism “fake, misleading and a misrepresentation of facts.” The controversy began after INEC reposted a statement debunking claims that its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, had a personal account on X or endorsed a partisan post. Peoples Gazette reported that Olusegun released a very similar statement hours before INEC’s version. INEC insists any external circulation of the statement was independent and not coordinated by the commission. It reaffirmed its strict non-partisan stance and urged Nigerians to trust only its verified channels for accurate information. This dispute comes amid growing scrutiny of INEC ahead of the 2027 elections and follows its recent derecognition of ADC leadership, which drew criticism from opposition parties.

What do you think sparked those plagiarism claims against INEC's statement compared to Dada Olusegun's press release?

Could you explain which passages seemed too similar between INEC's statement and Dada Olusegun's release?

Seems overblown. Those two releases cover similar points, not actual copying. People just jumping at shadows.

It's odd how quickly plagiarism allegations emerged when INEC addressed a political figure's media statement.

I'm not convinced those reports are entirely false or misleading without seeing a side-by-side comparison.

A useful step is to request both original press releases publicly so anyone can compare the wording directly.
