Tension Rises as INEC Delimitation Sparks Allegations Against Igala/Bassa in Kogi

Tension Rises as INEC Delimitation Sparks Allegations Against Igala/Bassa in Kogi

Tension is rising in Kogi as INEC holds consultations on restoring suppressed State Assembly constituencies. Stakeholders from Kogi East accuse rivals from the Central and West districts of scheming to reshape boundaries in their favor. Salifu Usman told journalists that some political players are pushing an “equality formula” to allocate four assembly seats to each federal constituency. He alleged this plan would shortchange Igala/Bassa areas while boosting seats for Central and West. He also claimed the State Attorney General steered the session toward that proposal. Traditional rulers and representatives from Kogi East insisted on following court judgments and population data in drawing constituencies. INEC has yet to announce its final decision and will accept more written submissions before concluding the process.

What concerns do you have about INEC's proposed boundary changes for Igala and Bassa constituencies in Kogi?

I agree. Adjustments should not disenfranchise communities or give undue edge to any group.

I doubt such tweaks will skew voting power. INEC often adjusts boundaries for balance, not political gain.

I share your concern that shifting constituency lines might weaken fair representation and heighten local tensions.

Seems odd that stakeholders from Central and West districts only push for delimitation now, just as suppressed seats gain attention.

I'm not convinced every allegation of scheming represents genuine concern rather than political posturing by rival camps.

To avoid conflict, INEC should publish clear maps and timelines while hosting inclusive town hall meetings across all districts.
