Zelenskiy Says US Security Guarantees Depend on Ukraine Ceding Donbas

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told Reuters that the United States has linked its security guarantees to Kyiv agreeing to give up the Donbas region. He said the US focus on the Iran conflict is driving pressure for a swift end to the war triggered by Russia’s 2022 invasion. Zelenskiy stressed that strong international security guarantees are vital to prevent Russia from renewing hostilities. He noted three rounds of trilateral talks with the US and Russia this year but said key issues remain unresolved, including funding for Ukraine’s military and responses to future aggression. The president warned that withdrawing from Donbas would weaken Ukraine’s and Europe’s defence. He urged a summit between the US, Russia, and Ukraine as the only sure path to a lasting peace deal.

Calling it a direct quid pro quo might oversimplify complex diplomacy—maybe the US simply wants quicker stability, not a territorial swap.
