Burkina Faso Junta Leader Declares ‘Forget Democracy’
Burkina Faso’s ruling junta head, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, told state television that citizens must abandon any hope for democratic elections. Since seizing power in September 2022, the military government has dissolved the electoral commission and banned all political parties. Traoré’s administration extended its transition period by five years amid rising jihadist violence. The United Nations has urged a reversal of the ban on political parties and called for respect for civic freedoms. The junta has also restricted international media and expelled several foreign journalists.
