NCS Warns Smugglers: Ports Are No Safe Havens as ₦53bn Seizures Grow

NCS Warns Smugglers: Ports Are No Safe Havens as ₦53bn Seizures Grow

The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted illicit drugs and expired pharmaceuticals valued at over ₦53.3 billion. The Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, warned that armed with intelligence and cutting-edge technology, smugglers will be tracked at every port. At the Apapa Command handover, Adeniyi detailed nine major seizures. These included more than 6.7 tonnes of cannabis concealed with vehicles, nearly 340,000 bottles of codeine syrup, and unregistered or expired medicines bearing fake NAFDAC numbers. All narcotics have been handed to NDLEA for prosecution, while suspect pharmaceutical products are now with NAFDAC for regulatory action and safe disposal. Adeniyi stressed that non-intrusive inspections and agency collaboration remain key to closing smuggling routes. He commended the Apapa Area Command officers and the joint effort of Customs, NDLEA and NAFDAC. The service vows to maintain relentless border surveillance and ensure every offender faces justice.

Absolutely. Prioritising staff training and a clear deployment schedule will help technology reach every major port without delay.

This ₦53bn figure sounds impressive, but previous tallies often lacked independent verification or clear breakdown of seized items.

Customs should conduct regular audits and partner with local communities for tip-offs to sustain pressure on smuggling networks.
