South Korean Judge Who Increased Ex-First Lady’s Sentence Found Dead
A judge who presided over the appeal that extended South Korea’s former first lady Kim Keon Hee’s prison term was found dead near the Seoul High Court compound. Police discovered Shin Jong-o on a flower bed at about 1:00 am and he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators say there are no signs of foul play. Officers reportedly found a handwritten note on his body reading, “I am sorry. I am leaving by my own choice.” The note made no mention of his role in the trial. Shin is believed to have fallen from a building. Last month, Shin increased Kim’s jail sentence to four years on charges of stock manipulation and bribery. He also ordered seizure of assets worth over 80 million won. Authorities say Shin’s family is deeply affected and has asked for privacy. He joined the Seoul High Court bench in 2010 after graduating from a top national law college.
