Nigerians Now Spend ₦1,513 Daily on Healthy Meals as Prices Climb
In February 2026, the average cost of a healthy diet in Nigeria rose to ₦1,513 per adult per day. This represents a 3.8% increase from January’s ₦1,458 and a 12.4% jump compared with February 2025. A report from the National Bureau of Statistics measures the least expensive mix of locally available foods that meet daily nutrient requirements. It shows that higher prices for animal-source foods, fruits, vegetables, oils, and fats are driving overall costs upward. Regional data reveal sharp disparities. The South-East has the highest daily cost at ₦1,889, while the North-East is lowest at ₦1,160. At the state level, Ekiti, Imo, and Abia are the most expensive, whereas Adamawa, Borno, and Taraba remain the cheapest for a balanced diet. Experts warn that many households may be forced to choose cheaper, less nutritious options. The figures underscore the growing challenge of maintaining a healthy diet amid ongoing inflation and tight budgets.
