Parents Blame 2027 Election for Suspension of WAEC, NECO Fee Hike

The Federal Government halted plans to raise SSCE registration fees from ₦27,000 to ₦50,000 after strong objections. Many parents and students across several states say the move was shelved not for public interest but out of fear of the 2027 elections. Stakeholders in Kaduna, Zamfara, Kogi, Enugu and Akwa Ibom warned that higher fees would worsen the out-of-school crisis amid rising living costs. The National Association of Nigerian Students rejected the proposal and urged broad consultations before any policy change. School proprietors and human rights groups called for a reasonable fee structure. They urged the government to subsidise examination costs and prioritise affordable education to prevent more children from dropping out.
