Ajadi Demands Governors’ Constitutional Authority to Command Troops Against Insecurity
Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo has called on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to grant state governors direct constitutional control over military and federal security operations. He argues this reform is vital to tackle the surge in kidnappings, banditry, and violent crime across the country. Ajadi cited Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s long-standing plea that governors, despite being called chief security officers, lack the power to deploy troops or federal agencies independently. He described the recent abduction in Oriire LGA as a painful illustration of how current limits leave citizens exposed and governors powerless. He urged the presidency and legislators to swiftly enact a decentralised security framework, strengthen intelligence sharing, deploy modern surveillance, improve welfare for operatives, and enforce tougher sanctions on colluding officials. He also warned against the politicisation of tragedy and stressed that true leaders must prioritise citizens’ safety over blame games.
