CJN Tells New Judges to Reject Unsolicited Gifts and Skip Extravagant Birthday Parties
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has warned newly appointed lower court judges against accepting unsolicited gifts. She said such offers can expose them to petitions and weaken public confidence in the judiciary. Speaking at the National Judicial Institute induction course on July 7, the CJN, through NJI Administrator Justice Babatunde Adejumo, urged judges to maintain integrity and deliver speedy, fair judgments. She also advised against hosting unnecessary birthday celebrations, noting that social events can become opportunities for gift-seeking and ethical pitfalls. Justice Adejumo congratulated the new judges and explained that the programme will reinforce their grasp of judicial ethics, courtroom management, and the practical application of substantive and procedural law.
