UK Pauses Chagos Islands Handover After US Opposition

Britain has halted plans to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. A UK government spokesperson said the deal hinged on support from Washington. Parliamentary time ran out on legislation to transfer sovereignty. Former US President Trump earlier described the handover as “great stupidity.” The archipelago includes Diego Garcia, a strategically vital military base used by both the UK and the US. Under a May agreement, Mauritius would regain control while leasing the base for 99 years. The islands have been disputed since Mauritius’s independence in the 1960s. Thousands of islanders were removed and continue to pursue legal claims for compensation.
