Late-Night Vigils and Loudspeakers: Balancing Worship with Neighbour’s Right to Rest
I’ve noticed a growing trend of places of worship using loudspeakers late into the night. Often these vigils and special programmes run past midnight and sometimes into the early morning hours. While everyone has the right to practise their religion freely, neighbours are forced to endure hours of noise. Many residents – workers, students, the elderly and the sick – struggle to rest when sound levels remain unregulated. Most faiths teach love, respect and consideration for others. So should our worship disrupt the peace and wellbeing of those around us? Other countries enforce night-time noise limits regardless of the source. Why do we seem to have different rules? Have you experienced this? How do you deal with it? I’m keen to hear your thoughts on finding a fair balance in our communities.
