Federal Government Jitters Over Potential Obi–Kwankwaso Ticket

Federal Government Jitters Over Potential Obi–Kwankwaso Ticket

Many analysts believe Rabiu Kwankwaso’s move into the ADC has turned it into a powerful challenger to the ruling APC. Kano State’s huge voting bloc and the Kwankwasiyya Movement make his defection especially significant. At a packed event at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Kwankwaso formally joined the party and received his membership card amid chants of “Obi-Kwankwado.” Videos of his registration went viral and fueled speculation about a joint presidential ticket with Peter Obi. In 2023, Obi and Kwankwaso won over 7.6 million votes combined in the presidential race. Together with Atiku Abubakar’s nearly seven million votes, the trio secured around 15 million ballots—far outpacing President Tinubu’s 8.8 million. Opposition strategists say a united front could reshape the 2027 election. Former Kano deputy governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna also resigned a federal appointment to join the ADC.
