Ambassador Ajayi: No Siege on Nigerians in South Africa, Situation Under Control

Temitope Ajayi, Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, says recent xenophobic incidents have been contained. In a Channels TV interview on April 27, he assured that Nigerians are not under siege and that the overall situation is under control. Ajayi described the attacks on foreigners as isolated tensions. He highlighted that Nigerian and South African officials are working closely to prevent a recurrence and to protect all foreign nationals in the country. He reported calm in Pretoria and Johannesburg, noting that earlier unrest in Durban was swiftly addressed by the authorities. The priority now is ensuring the safety and wellbeing of every person in South Africa.

What concrete indicators—beyond official statements—should we monitor to spot renewed hostilities early?

It's odd that the ambassador claims the situation is under control when sporadic violence still makes headlines.

I'm not convinced that declaring 'no siege' solves ongoing safety concerns on the ground in South Africa.
