Enugu’s $30bn Economy Drive: 63,000 Farmers Receive Free Inputs to Boost Agribusiness
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has launched the 2026 distribution of fertilisers, seeds and agrochemicals to 63,000 registered smallholder farmers. This move supports his administration’s goal of building a $30 billion economy, with 40 percent of growth coming from agriculture. The programme goes beyond providing inputs. It includes training, mechanisation and the development of full value chains. Officials plan to expand agro-processing zones, improve farm roads and use the new airport cargo terminal to export fresh and processed produce. Distribution will follow a strict database to eliminate middlemen. Inputs are marked “Not for Sale” and community leaders will oversee deliveries. Alongside free fertilisers, farmers will get improved seeds, cassava stems and climate-smart agriculture guidance backed by GIS and meteorological data. The state has also set up a modern seed testing laboratory and digital profiles for over 84,000 farmers. Tractor assembly, centre-pivot irrigation and other agro-industrial initiatives aim to boost yields, cut post-harvest losses and lower food costs across Enugu.
