How a Mini Solar Grid Brought 24-Hour Power to My Village

How a Mini Solar Grid Brought 24-Hour Power to My Village — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Some months ago I traveled to a remote village in Gassol LGA, Taraba State. There are no proper roads and it takes a three-hour bike ride to reach the community. I was amazed to see Chinese workers install solar panels on a small plot of land, and I was told the entire village now enjoys round-the-clock electricity. When I returned home two months later, the same team began installing poles and panels in my own village. They purchased land space, wired every house and shop, and provided each household with a prepaid meter box. We connect the box at home and buy electricity credit at local shops. A ₦2,000 purchase lasts me about two weeks, since I only use power for four hours a day. Heavier users can top up more often, and a ₦10,000 bundle can last an entire month depending on appliances. This prepaid solar grid has transformed daily life in our community.

How has constant electricity changed daily life for families and businesses in that remote Taraba village?

Definitely, having power all day lets families cook after sunset and businesses stay open late without worries.

It's impressive that the community now enjoys power around the clock, but I wonder how weather affects the solar grid's reliability.

I no sure say foreign firms always bring sustainable solutions, especially if maintenance funds dry up after initial installation.

Villagers should form a maintenance committee and train locals on basic repairs to ensure the mini grid continues powering homes long term.
