Meningitis Outbreak in Sokoto Claims 33 Children, 256 Suspected Cases

The Sokoto State Government has confirmed 33 child deaths following a Cerebrospinal Meningitis outbreak in eight local government areas. Since the infection resurfaced about a month ago, 256 suspected cases have been recorded, mostly affecting children and teenagers. Kurawa in Sabon Birni has raised alarm over daily fatalities, with symptoms including severe neck pain, high fever, vomiting and unconsciousness. Sabon Birni leads with 63 suspected cases, followed by Wamakko, Shagari, Tambuwal and Dange Shuni. Many victims die before reaching hospitals due to delayed treatment and misconceptions about the illness’s causes. In response, the state government and Doctors Without Borders have opened isolation centres in Dogo Daji and Tambuwal. Early treatment has improved outcomes, with no recent deaths under the intensified intervention.

Focusing only on numbers without examining vaccine access isn't enough; we should question whether supply chains are truly reaching rural communities.
