Service Over Power: Okoli Inaugurates New Cohort of ASTUC Youth Leaders in Anambra

Service Over Power: Okoli Inaugurates New Cohort of ASTUC Youth Leaders in Anambra

A colourful ceremony at the Anambra State Town Unions Council Secretariat marked the inauguration of 20 newly elected youth presidents under the ASTUC Youth Wing. The event signalled a fresh chapter in grassroots leadership across Anambra communities. In his opening address, Comrade Ken Okoli urged young leaders to view leadership as a duty of service rather than a title of power. He praised the state government’s support for credible youth elections and highlighted the need to work with traditional authorities while remaining the primary voice of young people. Guided by the “I Believe in Anambra” values—discipline, justice, patriotism and dignity of labour—these new presidents pledged to focus on job creation, skill acquisition and anti-drug campaigns. Plans were unveiled to revive agriculture through youth cooperatives and mechanised farming. The Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government challenged the cohort to build lasting legacies. With inclusive leadership and a values-driven mission, these young presidents aim to strengthen communities and drive sustainable development.

Do these youth leaders hold real decision-making authority, or is this largely a symbolic gesture?

Doubtful these 20 youth presidents can spark real development without solid plans and resources in place.

Launching new youth leaders is fine, but without genuine follow-up on their agenda, this could end up being another ceremonial exercise.

For real impact, grassroots youth presidents should hold regular town meetings and share progress reports with constituents.
