Why Martin O’Neill Stuck with Iheanacho After 2-0 Loss

Why Martin O’Neill Stuck with Iheanacho After 2-0 Loss

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has explained why he decided to start Kelechi Iheanacho in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Dundee United. He says Iheanacho’s recent recovery from a hamstring issue and impressive training performances earned him the nod. “Tomas was under the weather all week and only trained when he still felt off,” O’Neill told local sports reporters. “Iheanacho had hamstring problems earlier, but he’s been excellent in practice. He might not last the full game, but I wanted to give him the chance.” Iheanacho joined Celtic on a free transfer last summer. He has battled injuries since arriving but is now pushing for more playing time.

It's odd that training form alone outweighed a poor match showing and recent fitness doubt before a full start.

Sure he trained well, but isn't it risky to trust a player just back from a hamstring issue right away?

Perhaps O'Neill could rotate Iheanacho with another forward during recovery weeks to manage fitness without sacrificing squad strength.
