Japan Hikes Visa Fees for Nigerians by 400% from July
The Japanese government has approved its first visa fee increase in 48 years. Single-entry visas will cost ¥15,000, up from ¥3,000. Multiple-entry visas rise to ¥30,000 from ¥6,000. These changes take effect on applications submitted from July 1. Officials say the new fees reflect inflation and exchange rate shifts since 1978. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told reporters he does not expect an immediate drop in tourism. The Upper House also passed a bill to raise residence status and extension fees to as much as ¥300,000. Revenue from the increases will help manage Japan’s record foreign population of 4.13 million. Funds will expand language education programs and strengthen measures against illegal overstayers. The government notes its new charges are now closer to those in many Western countries.
