LAMATA to Penalise Lagos Commuters Who Pay Cash From August 1

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority says commuters who pay cash on regulated transport services will be penalised from August 1. The enforcement is part of Lagos’ cashless fare policy, which requires passengers to use the Cowry Card. LAMATA says passengers and transport staff who give or receive unauthorised cash payments could be held liable under applicable laws. The agency says the measure is intended to curb revenue leakage and improve accountability across regulated bus and rail services. Commuters have been advised to report drivers or conductors who demand cash. To address card top-up concerns, Touch and Pay Technologies says passengers can use self-service kiosks, the mobile app and Carry Hub to check balances and recent transactions. A wider postpaid and single-card system is also expected before year-end.
