7 Buhari-Era Heavyweights Now on Tinubu’s Corruption Hotseat

7 Buhari-Era Heavyweights Now on Tinubu’s Corruption Hotseat — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Tinubu administration has charged these former public officers for alleged misappropriation of funds under the Buhari government: 1. Ahmed Idris, former Accountant-General: accused of diverting ₦109.5 billion. 2. Saleh Mamman, ex-Minister of Power: convicted over the diversion of ₦33.8 billion. 3. Abubakar Malami, ex-Attorney-General: forfeited 48 properties valued at ₦212 billion. 4. Malami also faces a 16-count conspiracy and money laundering indictment involving ₦8.7 billion alongside family members. 5. Among the seized assets was a mosque in Kebbi built with proceeds of illicit wealth. 6. Godwin Emefiele, former CBN Governor: indicted for diverting ₦154.39 billion. 7. Emefiele also forfeited 753 housing units to the federal government. I worry that such large-scale graft across different sectors highlights deep flaws in our justice system. We must strengthen penalties and overhaul judicial processes to deter grand corruption and safeguard public resources.

It's surprising how these investigations only surfaced after the administration change, despite years of alleged misappropriations under Buhari.

I worry we might be focusing more on headlines than on systemic reforms that actually prevent future corruption.

To avoid repeating past mistakes, we should demand stronger audit processes and more transparent budgets at every government level.
