FG Clarifies: No Ban on Raw Cocoa Exports, Prioritises Local Processing

FG Clarifies: No Ban on Raw Cocoa Exports, Prioritises Local Processing

The Federal Government has dismissed rumours of an impending ban on raw cocoa exports. According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, such reports do not reflect government policy. Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the focus is on value addition. The aim is to boost local processing, attract investment, improve farmers’ incomes and increase export earnings from every tonne of cocoa produced. Raw cocoa exports will continue alongside expansion of domestic processing capacity. Strengthening traceability and meeting international standards remain key to securing access to premium global markets.

With raw cocoa exports still allowed, how might local processors ramp up capacity to meet both domestic goals and global demand?

Absolutely, boosting capacity means investing in modern machinery, training technicians and strengthening supply chains to serve local and export markets.

It's interesting that the FG stresses local processing while insisting there's no raw cocoa export ban in place today.

I'm not sure prioritising local processing alone solves farmers' pricing issues, especially if global buyers still prefer raw beans.

Support programmes should include training for cocoa cooperatives on processing techniques and market development strategies across regions.
