Rain-Induced Landslide Kills Four Children and One Adult in Calabar
Heavy rains in Calabar Municipality triggered landslides in the Ikot Anwatim community, burying homes and killing five residents, including four children. Two others are receiving medical care after being pulled from the rubble. A rapid assessment by the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Red Cross revealed two homes were destroyed in the disaster. The agency’s director described the loss as heartbreaking and offered condolences to the families. Officials said they will provide immediate relief to affected households and carry out a comprehensive survey to guide emergency aid and long-term risk reduction. They urged residents in erosion-prone areas to report land cracks and follow evacuation orders. Recommendations include a detailed geotechnical study of the site, ongoing public education on landslide risks, and considering relocation for those in high-risk zones. One resident commended the swift response but appealed for sustained government support to help families rebuild.
