Mary’s Fragrant Act: Jesus Anointed at Bethany (John 12:1-11)
Six days before Passover, Jesus visits Bethany where Lazarus lives. A dinner is held in his honor, and Martha serves while Lazarus reclines at the table. Mary takes a pint of pure nard, pours it on Jesus’ feet, and wipes them with her hair. The expensive perfume fills the house with its fragrance. Judas Iscariot objects, suggesting the perfume could have been sold for the poor. Jesus defends Mary, saying her act prepares him for burial and reminding them that the poor will always be with them. A large crowd of Jews comes to see Jesus and Lazarus. Alarmed that many now believe, the chief priests plot to kill Lazarus as well.
