1 / 4

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the lynching of 21-year-old Emmanuel Effiong. He was accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm in Mbak 4 Community, Uyo Local Government Area. Viral footage showed Emmanuel tied by his hands and legs, beaten with sticks and machetes, and dragged beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up. His body was abandoned at a junction for two days before it was secretly buried in a shallow grave in a nearby forest. During interrogation, the suspects—David Okon, Joseph Gibson, Essien Solomon, and Imoh Asuquo—confessed and led officers to the burial site. Police exhumed the body for autopsy and recovered the pick-up van, the wheelbarrow used to transport the corpse, and the weapons used in the attack. The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, condemned jungle justice as a grave criminal offence. He warned that anyone involved in mob violence or extrajudicial killings will face the full weight of the law.
