Atletico’s Cerezo Blasts Laporta’s ‘Frivolous’ Transfer Games Over Álvarez

Atletico’s Cerezo Blasts Laporta’s ‘Frivolous’ Transfer Games Over Álvarez

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has accused Barcelona counterpart Joan Laporta of misleading fans with public transfer talk over Julián Álvarez. Despite Barcelona’s €100 million bid, Atletico insist the Argentine forward is not for sale. The saga intensified when Álvarez formally requested a move at the World Cup, and Laporta warned Barca’s offer would expire. Cerezo says he personally urged Laporta to drop the pursuit, calling his rival “frivolous” for enjoying the media spotlight. Atletico have also rejected a reported €150 million approach from Real Madrid. Since joining in 2024, Álvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances and will now refocus on the World Cup final.

Do you think public transfer statements help or hurt a club's negotiation strategy in high-stakes bids like Álvarez's?

Absolutely! Loud statements fit more drama than chess, can tip your whole hand before negotiation even starts.

Laporta's comments do seem more like a publicity stunt than genuine interest, especially with Atletico's firm stance on keeping Álvarez.

I'm not convinced Cerezo is above these games either—Atletico often leaks similar strong denials when they actually want to drive up demand.

Clubs should focus on clear, private negotiations instead of public sparring to avoid inflated expectations and preserve fan trust.
