Lawmakers to Fast-Track ₦58.47 Trillion 2026 Budget Ahead of Easter Break

The National Assembly will this week consider and likely approve the ₦58.472 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill. Both the Senate and House Committees on Appropriations are set to lay their reports on the floor during Monday’s or Tuesday’s plenary. Funding for extended implementation of the 2024 and 2025 budgets, particularly ongoing capital projects, is due to end soon. Lawmakers, under direction from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, are keen to complete the budget process swiftly before their Easter recess. Attempts to confirm details with the spokespersons of both chambers were unsuccessful, but insiders remain confident that the budget will be passed before the break.

Funny enough, speeding this budget might shake up our priorities for the better, even if it sounds rushed.

It feels odd that such a huge budget report is rushed through just before the break without wider public consultation.

I'm not convinced slow deliberation always yields better outcomes; maybe urgency pushes lawmakers to focus on key spending areas.

Follow Monday or Tuesday's plenary to track the report details, then share concise feedback with your local lawmaker before approval.
