Ogidi Town Union, Not Anambra Government, Funded Achebe Statue – Soludo’s Aide
The Anambra State Government says the Chinua Achebe statue at Ugwu-Nwasike Roundabout in Ogidi was entirely conceived and financed by the Ogidi Town Union, not by the state. Senior Special Assistant on New Media Ejimofor Opara issued the clarification after social media users praised the tribute but questioned the sculpture’s likeness. He urged critics to honour the community’s thoughtful initiative instead of focusing solely on artistic interpretation. The monument also features engraved excerpts from Achebe’s novels including Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God and No Longer at Ease. Opara noted that symbolism, not perfect likeness, underpins the tribute and reminded Nigerians of earlier honours such as renaming the state airport after Achebe.
