Court Sentences Nursing Mother to 20 Years for Possessing 302 AK-47 Rounds

Court Sentences Nursing Mother to 20 Years for Possessing 302 AK-47 Rounds

Halima Haliru Umar was arrested on July 7, 2025, in Barkin Ladi and Jos North areas of Plateau State after security agents found 302 live AK-47 rounds in her possession. At the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Hauwa Yilwa convicted Umar on counts of unlawful ammunition possession and attempting to support terrorism. She pleaded guilty on May 11 and admitted the facts presented by the Department of State Services. Her defence counsel asked for leniency, highlighting that she is a first-time offender and a nursing mother of a one-year-old child. The judge handed her a 20-year term on the main charge and one year on the second count. Trial on the remaining charges resumes on July 9.

A 20-year term for possession alone feels excessive if no evidence of violence or intent to use those rounds exists.
