Trump Declares Lebanon Ceasefire; Netanyahu Threatens Strikes Over Continued Attacks
On June 1, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to halt fighting in southern Lebanon. He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to pause a planned invasion of Beirut’s southern suburbs while Hezbollah would stop its rocket fire. Just two hours later, Netanyahu issued a public warning. He vowed that if Hezbollah continued targeting Israeli cities and civilians, Israel would strike suspected terrorist positions in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district. The Israeli military has ordered local residents to evacuate for their safety. Since March 2026, over 3,400 people have died in Lebanon and more than one million have been displaced. A previous ceasefire in April repeatedly broke down. Iran also suspended talks with U.S. mediators in protest over Israel’s actions. The exact terms of this new truce remain disputed, with no unified agreement yet in place.
