How Cocoa and Cashew Fueled Nigeria’s Non-Oil Export Surge in 2025

Nigeria’s push for export diversification saw non-oil exports rise to ₦12.36 trillion in 2025, up from ₦9.09 trillion in 2024. Agricultural goods made up 41.04% of this total. Since Q2 2025, the National Bureau of Statistics has grouped this data under major traded agricultural products, highlighting the export-driven gains. Cocoa led the way with 24.61% of non-oil shipments, followed by strong performances from cashew and sesame. The Nigerian Export Promotion Council reports export volumes grew 10% to 8.02 million metric tonnes, driven by higher shipment levels as well as better prices. Despite the boom, export earnings remain tied to a few commodities. Soybean exports plunged 62.08% year-on-year to ₦47.48 billion, accounting for just 0.38% of non-oil exports. Production challenges and stiff global competition were blamed, even as key buyers included India, Canada, the United States, Sri Lanka and Gabon.

Absolutely, leveraging cocoa and cashew lessons can spark fresh export paths, if we boost processing and support smallholder farmers.

Totally! Applying that cocoa–cashew quality focus and solid market links to other crops could spark fresh export growth.

The data shows a sharp jump in agricultural exports, yet I question whether smallholder farmers are truly benefiting from this surge.

I'm not convinced cocoa and cashew alone can sustain this export momentum without tackling infrastructure and supply chain issues head on.

Focusing on affordable storage, reliable logistics, and streamlined export procedures could help small-scale farmers tap into higher foreign revenue.
