How Cocoa and Cashew Fueled Nigeria’s Non-Oil Export Surge in 2025
Nigeria’s push for export diversification saw non-oil exports rise to ₦12.36 trillion in 2025, up from ₦9.09 trillion in 2024. Agricultural goods made up 41.04% of this total. Since Q2 2025, the National Bureau of Statistics has grouped this data under major traded agricultural products, highlighting the export-driven gains. Cocoa led the way with 24.61% of non-oil shipments, followed by strong performances from cashew and sesame. The Nigerian Export Promotion Council reports export volumes grew 10% to 8.02 million metric tonnes, driven by higher shipment levels as well as better prices. Despite the boom, export earnings remain tied to a few commodities. Soybean exports plunged 62.08% year-on-year to ₦47.48 billion, accounting for just 0.38% of non-oil exports. Production challenges and stiff global competition were blamed, even as key buyers included India, Canada, the United States, Sri Lanka and Gabon.
