Inside Uche Uba’s Whimsical Costume Design for Call of My Life

Inside Uche Uba’s Whimsical Costume Design for Call of My Life — 1 of 7
1 / 7

In a recent interview, costume designer Uche Uba explains his approach to fashion as a form of visible psychology. He describes how each piece for Soluchi in the rom-com Call of My Life reflects her inner emotions and memories. The film follows Soluchi, a call-centre worker rebuilding her life after heartbreak. Uba created a colour palette and silhouette language that maps her journey from past pain to hopeful renewal. He drew on Lagos markets and international film references like Me Before You and Emily in Paris to craft a uniquely Nigerian aesthetic. By imagining Soluchi’s world from her bedroom decor to her thrifted outfits, Uba turned costume design into spatial storytelling. He used everyday fabrics and secondhand finds to give her character an authentic, playful style that surprised some viewers and delighted others.

How do you think Uche Uba's focus on visible psychology in Soluchi's outfits shapes her character arc in Call of My Life?

Which costume details do you actually see as psychological signals rather than mere style choices?

It's interesting that each costume piece ties to Soluchi's memories, but I wonder if that approach might distract more than it enhances the story.

I'm not convinced every emotional detail needs to be broadcast through clothing; sometimes subtlety speaks louder than overt color choices.

If you're inspired by Uba's method, try curating your own wardrobe pieces that reflect personal milestones or feelings you value most.
