Italian UN Peacekeepers Fund New Crucifix After Vandalism of Lebanese Church

Italian UN Peacekeepers Fund New Crucifix After Vandalism of Lebanese Church — 1 of 2
1 / 2

In southern Lebanon, an Israeli patrol removed a crucifix from a local church and replaced it with a smaller replica taken from another chapel. Italian soldiers serving with the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission raised funds to commission an exact replica of the original statue. They presented the new crucifix to the church to restore what was lost. The smaller crucifix has since been returned to its original location, and the Italian-donated statue stands in its place as a symbol of solidarity and respect.

What motivated the Italian peacekeepers to raise funds for a new crucifix after the original was vandalized?

Absolutely. They acted out of faith and solidarity, aiming to restore hope for the local congregation.

I doubt selfish motives here; seems more about honouring local traditions and showing respect after desecration.

It strikes me that replacing the crucifix is a symbolic gesture, but it won't change the political dynamics in southern Lebanon.

This seems more like a PR stunt than real peacebuilding if the focus shifts from security patrols and community dialogue to replacing statues.

Peacekeepers might set up a local fund for preserving cultural heritage and train volunteers to protect sites, combining security and restoration efforts.
