Governor Okpebholo Tells Clerics: Don’t Plead for Criminal Suspects

Governor Okpebholo Tells Clerics: Don’t Plead for Criminal Suspects

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has urged religious leaders not to intervene on behalf of anyone arrested for criminal activities. He spoke on Wednesday in Benin at a state-organised Christian Association of Nigeria conference. He warned: “Pastors, if you hear that I have arrested somebody, don’t come to beg me.” Okpebholo acknowledged security challenges but said they were being exaggerated by political interests. He revealed that local collaborators now recruit outsiders for kidnap-for-ransom schemes and recalled a false alarm on Sapele Road. He assured residents that security forces were working round the clock to prevent criminals from gaining a foothold. CAN leaders praised his commitment to public service and ongoing infrastructure improvements.

Church groups could establish a legal aid fund separate from spiritual counsel to avoid conflicts while still protecting congregants' rights.
