Federal High Court Sentences Boko Haram Food Supplier to 40 Years

Federal High Court Sentences Boko Haram Food Supplier to 40 Years

Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Hamatu Modu—who admitted supplying food and intelligence to Boko Haram in Borno State—to 40 years’ imprisonment. Modu pleaded guilty to four terrorism-related charges brought by the Attorney General’s office. The judge imposed 10 years on each count but ordered that the terms run concurrently, meaning Modu will serve 10 years in total. In a separate ruling, the same judge handed a 10-year sentence to another supplier, Isah Ali, backdated to the date of his 2019 arrest. Both men will undergo rehabilitation and deradicalization after their prison terms. The Federal Ministry of Interior must determine where they will serve their sentences.

Do you think that a 40-year jail term for a Boko Haram food supplier will actually deter others from aiding terrorists?

I doubt such stiff sentence alone will scare everyone. Poverty and coercion still drive some to help extremist groups.

It's surprising that someone could openly supply both food and intelligence for so long before conviction.

This punishment sounds more about setting an example than balancing individual circumstances or chances for rehabilitation.

Authorities need tougher border checks and community outreach in Borno to stop local suppliers before they reach sentencing.
