From Eight Months Pregnant to Canadian PR: My Japa Journey via UK and Express Entry

From Eight Months Pregnant to Canadian PR: My Japa Journey via UK and Express Entry — 1 of 2
1 / 2

In August 2022, I left Nigeria for the UK at eight months pregnant to avoid giving birth at home. I secured an offer from the University of Hull with a £2,000 deposit and applied for my student visa while my husband came as my dependent. We booked last-minute flights, even though my doctor was nervous about certifying me to travel so late in pregnancy. While studying, I worked in care homes and as a support worker, but UK sponsorship rules and a rising timeline for indefinite leave made me consider Canada. A stranger’s Instagram comment about healthcare category draws led me to update my Express Entry profile that night. My score jumped to 475, and I received my PR invitation within a month. In Calgary, childcare costs dropped and wages rose. I treated job hunting like a full-time role, tailoring each CV and sending 10–15 applications daily. Within three months I landed an insurance customer advisor role. Today, I’m saving more, feel respected, and enjoy a supportive daycare system. My advice: research thoroughly, skip visa agents, and watch for targeted Express Entry draws.

It's interesting that a last-minute flight to the UK and a £2,000 deposit secured your student status so fast.

Though avoiding childbirth at home makes sense, I wonder if there were safer, more cost-effective options within Nigeria you might have overlooked.

Consider scheduling your Canadian Express Entry biometrics early and arranging temporary housing before arrival to reduce stress and unexpected expenses in a new country.
