Calabar Shipping Agent Arrested for Posing as Navy Officer, Extorting ₦400,000

Calabar Shipping Agent Arrested for Posing as Navy Officer, Extorting ₦400,000

The Nigerian Navy has detained Mr. Nsikak Ekpo, a shipping agent in Calabar, for impersonating naval personnel and collecting ₦400,000 under false pretences. He allegedly claimed the money was for security services during a rescue operation in the Calabar Channel. Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho said the arrest followed a complaint through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An investigation by Naval Headquarters found that no Navy personnel solicited or received any payment in connection with the incident aboard the Cameroonian-registered MV CHIMBA Express on December 22, 2025. Ekpo has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force’s CID in Calabar for further investigation and possible prosecution. The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and warned that it will act decisively against anyone who tries to exploit its name.

In light of this Calabar agent impersonation, what steps should locals take to confirm security officers' identities before handing over money?

Agreed. Always insist on official ID cards, verify badge numbers with their station, and demand proper receipts before paying anyone.

I agree, folks should always demand to see official ID cards at designated posts and double-check credentials before payment.

It's worrying that someone could claim naval status without checks, highlighting potential lapses in local verification processes around Calabar Channel.

While impersonation is serious, claims about rescue operations sometimes invite skepticism—was any real danger present or just opportunism?

Citizens should insist on proper credentials or call official navy hotlines before paying for any security or rescue services.
