NLC Sounds Alarm Over Encroachment on Abuja’s Green Zones and Waterways

The Nigeria Labour Congress has condemned the ongoing destruction of public parks, forests and natural waterways in the Federal Capital Territory. The union warns that these actions undermine climate justice and environmental sustainability. NLC’s Climate Change Coordinator explained that clearing vegetation and blocking waterways is driving up temperatures in Abuja. He described the loss of green spaces as “scandalous” and said structures sprouting along riverbeds violate the city’s design principles. The Congress is calling on the FCT Administration to halt further encroachments, restore the Abuja Master Plan and protect workers and low-income communities who face the worst environmental impacts.
