Nigerian Army Appoints GOCs for New Divisions as Security Structure Expands
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has appointed General Officers Commanding for newly established Nigerian Army divisions after presidential approval for four additional formations. The expansion is intended to improve troop deployment, command and control, border security and responses to security threats nationwide. The new divisions will begin operations once they attain Initial Operational Capability, with plans to later reach full operational capacity. Under the revised structure, 9 Division in Ilorin will oversee Kwara and Niger states, while 10 Division in Jalingo will cover border areas of Taraba and Adamawa. The 5 Division in Makurdi will cover Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi, while 83 Division in Benin City is expected to cover Edo, Delta and Bayelsa when activated later in the year. Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been appointed GOC of 9 Division, Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife will lead 10 Division, and Major General Moses Gara will head 5 Division. Three new brigades have also been activated in Gboko, Kainji and Lafia.
